How does American Cool diagnose an AC, heat pump, or refrigeration problem?

Accepted Answer

We start with the complaint, equipment history, what changed, and the system type. From there we inspect the obvious conditions first, then measure the parts of the system that apply to the problem. That can include electrical power and amperage, controls and safeties, airflow and static pressure, refrigerant pressures and temperatures, superheat and subcooling, water temperatures or flow on water-source equipment, and actual heating or cooling performance. We compare the readings with each other, the equipment information, and manufacturer data when available. One number by itself is rarely the diagnosis. The goal is to identify what created the symptom before recommending parts, repairs, or replacement.

How do you decide whether an HVAC system should be repaired or replaced?

Accepted Answer

Replacement is not our automatic starting point. We look at the current failure, equipment age, repair history, overall mechanical condition, compressor and coil condition, refrigerant type and availability, airflow, efficiency, recurring problems, repair cost, and what the system is actually capable of producing. A repair can make good sense when the rest of the equipment is healthy and the failure is isolated. Replacement can make more sense when major failures are stacking up, capacity is no longer adequate, the system has repeated expensive problems, or the repair would put substantial money into equipment with limited useful life. We explain the evidence so you can compare the options rather than making the decision from age alone.

Can you tell whether my AC is actually producing the cooling capacity it should?

Accepted Answer

In many systems, yes. When access and operating conditions allow, we can estimate airflow and use return-air and supply-air conditions to calculate delivered cooling performance. We can then compare that result with manufacturer performance information for the actual indoor and outdoor conditions instead of assuming a unit labeled 3 tons, 4 tons, or 5 tons is automatically producing that amount in the field. Capacity testing is especially useful when a system runs for long periods, rooms stay uncomfortable, or refrigeration readings look acceptable but the building still does not cool as expected. It helps separate equipment-capacity problems from airflow, duct, control, or building-load problems.

Question 4

If my AC is not cooling, does that automatically mean it needs refrigerant?

Accepted Answer

No. Poor cooling can come from low airflow, dirty evaporator or condenser coils, failed motors, electrical or control problems, refrigerant restrictions, compressor problems, duct losses, improper equipment setup, excessive building load, or an incorrect refrigerant charge. If a sealed system is actually low on refrigerant, there is normally a reason the refrigerant was lost. Adding refrigerant without confirming the operating condition can hide the real problem and may create a different problem if the system was not low to begin with. We use the system readings together to determine whether refrigerant charge is actually part of the fault.

Why does my evaporator coil or refrigerant line freeze?

Accepted Answer

Freezing means the evaporator is operating below the conditions it should, but there are several possible reasons. Low airflow from a dirty filter or coil, blower problems, excessive static pressure, restricted ductwork, low refrigerant from a leak, metering-device problems, restrictions, or other refrigeration conditions can all contribute. Ice can also make the original problem worse because it blocks even more airflow as it builds. A frozen coil should not automatically be treated as a low-refrigerant problem. The useful diagnosis is finding out why the evaporator temperature dropped low enough for moisture on the coil to freeze.

Why does my AC run for a long time without reaching the thermostat setting?

Accepted Answer

Long runtime is not automatically a failure. During very hot Coachella Valley conditions, a properly sized system may run for long periods near the building's design load, and variable-capacity equipment is intentionally designed for longer cycles. When the home still cannot maintain temperature, we look for lost equipment capacity, dirty heat-transfer surfaces, refrigerant problems, airflow restrictions, duct heat gain or leakage, control issues, equipment sizing, and the actual heat entering the home. The important question is not simply how long the unit runs—it is whether the system is producing and delivering the capacity the house requires under the conditions present that day.

Question 7

Why are some rooms hotter or colder than others even when the AC is running?

Accepted Answer

Uneven rooms are often a distribution or building-load problem rather than a failed outdoor unit. Causes can include undersized or restricted ducts, crushed flex duct, excessive duct length, poor return-air paths, leakage, high static pressure, attic heat gain, balancing problems, solar exposure, windows, insulation, or a room whose load changed after an addition or remodel. We separate the equipment's ability to create cooling from the duct system's ability to deliver it and the room's actual heat load. That prevents replacing good equipment when the real limitation is somewhere between the blower and the room.

Do I need a load calculation when replacing my residential AC or heat pump?

Accepted Answer

A load calculation is especially valuable when equipment is being replaced, the home has changed, comfort has never been even, or there is uncertainty about the existing size. Simply matching the old tonnage can repeat an old sizing mistake. The home's cooling and heating load is affected by square footage, windows, orientation, insulation, infiltration, ceiling and roof conditions, occupancy, internal loads, and room-by-room exposure. Equipment selection should then consider the manufacturer's actual performance and whether the duct system can move the required airflow. The purpose is not to make the system larger—it is to match the system to the house it actually serves.

Question 9

What is the difference between a packaged unit, split system, heat pump, and mini-split?

Accepted Answer

A packaged unit places most of the heating and cooling components in one outdoor cabinet and connects directly to the home's duct system. A central split system separates the outdoor condenser from an indoor furnace or air handler. A heat pump can provide both cooling and heating by reversing the refrigeration cycle. A mini-split or ductless system uses one or more indoor fan-coil units connected to an outdoor inverter-driven unit, usually without a central duct system. The layout and operating technology matter because the correct measurements, controls, airflow checks, and repair approach are not identical for every system type.

What does residential HVAC maintenance actually include at American Cool?

Accepted Answer

We treat maintenance as a condition review, not just a checklist. Depending on the equipment and access, we look at filters, coils, drainage, blower and condenser airflow, motors, electrical components, controls, temperatures, and refrigeration operation when appropriate. We also look for developing conditions such as rising pressure drop, dirty heat-transfer surfaces, weak components, drain problems, abnormal temperatures, or changes from previous visits. The goal is to understand how the equipment is operating today, identify items that need correction, and create useful history over time rather than simply marking boxes and leaving.

What types of commercial HVAC equipment does American Cool work on?

Accepted Answer

Our commercial HVAC work includes packaged rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, water-source heat pumps, ceiling-mounted equipment, outside-air and ventilation equipment, and related controls and air-distribution systems. Commercial systems can also include multiple refrigeration circuits, VFD-driven motors, economizers, water valves, building automation commands, and other controls that interact with the mechanical equipment. The exact service approach depends on the system architecture, equipment condition, access, and the problem the facility is experiencing. When requesting service, model and serial information, equipment location, fault codes, and a description of the symptom are helpful when available.

Why can commercial HVAC equipment shut down even when the compressor itself is not bad?

Accepted Answer

Commercial equipment often has a chain of controls and safeties that must all allow operation. A compressor can stop because of high or low pressure protection, water-flow problems, airflow problems, motor protection, phase or voltage conditions, condensate safeties, sensors, control boards, VFD faults, BAS commands, schedules, or other interlocks. That is why seeing a compressor off does not prove the compressor failed. We trace what command was present, what protection opened, and what operating condition caused the system to remove or prevent the command. That approach helps avoid replacing an expensive component when another system condition actually caused the shutdown.

Question 13

Can you work with building automation systems, VFDs, and commercial HVAC controls?

Accepted Answer

When they are part of the HVAC fault, we can evaluate the control side of the system along with the mechanical equipment. That can include thermostats, sensors, relays, safeties, control boards, staging, VFD operation, economizers, actuators, and BAS commands or schedules that affect whether equipment is being told to run. The purpose is to determine whether the problem is mechanical, electrical, control-related, or coming from another building system. The exact level of BAS access depends on the installed platform, permissions, available documentation, and what the facility allows us to access.

What types of commercial refrigeration equipment do you service?

Accepted Answer

Our commercial refrigeration work includes walk-in coolers, walk-in freezers, reach-in equipment, remote condensing and evaporator systems, and related refrigeration controls, defrost systems, piping, and components. Different systems can have very different operating requirements. A self-contained reach-in, a remote walk-in freezer, and a multi-evaporator system may all create cold temperatures, but the piping, controls, defrost sequence, heat rejection, refrigerant management, and diagnostic process are not the same. Tell us the equipment type, box temperature, setpoint, symptoms, alarms, and any recent work when requesting service.

Question 15

If my walk-in cooler or freezer is warm, does that automatically mean it is low on refrigerant?

Accepted Answer

No. A warm box is the result of the entire refrigeration system and the load being placed on it. Possible causes include evaporator airflow problems, ice buildup, defrost faults, failed fans, dirty condensers, high ambient conditions, compressor problems, refrigerant restrictions, controls, door infiltration, warm product loading, damaged gaskets, or an actual refrigerant leak. Refrigerant charge is one part of the diagnosis, not the default answer. We look at the box condition, evaporator, condenser, controls, refrigeration circuit, and pull-down behavior together to determine why the system is not removing heat fast enough.

Why does a commercial freezer keep icing up?

Accepted Answer

Some frost is normal, but heavy or repeated ice usually means the system is not clearing moisture or controlling infiltration correctly. Possible causes include defrost timer or board problems, failed heaters, termination sensors, fan-delay issues, blocked drains, door or gasket leakage, excessive door traffic, failed evaporator fans, airflow restrictions, or refrigeration-feed conditions that keep the coil abnormally cold. Where the ice forms and when it returns are useful clues. The correct repair depends on whether the problem is defrost, airflow, infiltration, drainage, controls, or the refrigeration circuit itself.

Question 17

If refrigerant has been added more than once, should the system be leak checked?

Accepted Answer

Yes, repeated refrigerant loss should lead to investigating where the refrigerant is going. Refrigerant is not consumed like fuel in a sealed system. A leak can occur at coils, piping, service valves or cores, joints, vibration points, controls, or other components. The best leak-search method depends on the refrigerant, system size, leak rate, accessibility, and whether the system can be pressurized or operated safely. Simply adding refrigerant repeatedly can become expensive and does not correct the source of the loss. Once the leak is found, the repair decision can be based on the location, equipment condition, repairability, and overall economics.

What warranties or workmanship protection does American Cool provide?

Accepted Answer

American Cool offers written warranty and workmanship protections on qualifying work, including our Lifetime Brazed-Joint Workmanship protection and other qualifying parts, labor, compressor, and Make-It-Right protections described on our Warranty page. These protections are not unconditional. Eligibility, covered work, exclusions, maintenance requirements, claim procedures, duration, and other conditions depend on the specific written terms for the job. The proposal, invoice, warranty document, and applicable manufacturer warranty control the actual coverage. We want customers to know what is protected, but we also want the promise stated accurately rather than turning a warranty headline into something broader than the written terms.

What financing and payment options are available?

Accepted Answer

For qualifying residential new-equipment purchases, Synchrony financing may be available, including an 18-month no-interest promotional option when that promotion applies and the customer is approved. Other Synchrony options may also be available. For commercial service, COD is the standard arrangement unless an approved account has been established. Net 15 or Net 30 terms must be approved before the diagnostic or repair visit, and some accounts may be administered through Riviera Finance where applicable. American Cool may also consider limited short-term in-house payment arrangements in certain situations. Financing, Net terms, and in-house arrangements are subject to approval and the written terms that apply to the specific job.

What information should I provide when requesting service?

Accepted Answer

Start with the property location, whether the job is residential or commercial, the equipment type if you know it, and a simple description of what the system is doing or not doing. Helpful details include when the problem started, thermostat or controller readings, error codes, unusual noises, ice or water, recent repairs, and photos of the equipment or display when available. Commercial customers should also tell us about purchase-order requirements, company paperwork, Net-term approval, billing portals, or other payment requirements before dispatch. You do not need to diagnose the system yourself—clear symptoms and basic equipment information are enough to help us prepare for the visit.
